COSTA RICA, THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH

COSTA RICA, THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH

Costa Rica is giving Disneyland a run for their money as the, “Happiest place on earth.” According to multiple independent research groups, Costa Rica is the happiest country.

Costa Rica Ranks #1

The Happy Planet Index, the New Economics Foundation, and the World Database of Happiness, all rank Costa Rica as the happiest country. All of these indexes have varying ways of collecting data but they all come to the same conclusion. Costa Rica has a culture of happiness.

Living the “Pura Vida” Lifestyle

So What Makes Costa Ricans So Happy? Perhaps it is their "Pura Vida" lifestyle. "Pura Vida" is more than just a Costa Rican slogan; it's the way of life, seeking harmony with the land and each other. Because of their laid back attitude and views, people here tend to enjoy life more and live in the moment. Perhaps it's the wildlife and natural beauty that makes them appreciate life, but the warm Costa Rican culture is so welcoming. Pura vida literally means "pure life", but the meaning is closer to "full of life", or "this is living!" Pura Vida can be used as a greeting and a farewell, to express satisfaction, or to politely express indifference. Costa Ricans use the phrase to express a philosophy of strong community, perseverance, resilience in overcoming difficulties with good spirits, enjoying life slowly, and celebrating good fortune. Why can’t we all be so positive?

Costa Rican Abolishes their Army

Could it be a coincidence that Costa Rica is one of the very few countries to have an abolished army and be the happiest nation on earth? In 1949, Costa Rica made the remarkable decision to dissolve its armed forces and invest in education. Increased schooling created a more stable society, less prone to the conflicts, because a peaceful nation has peaceful and happy citizens. The budget previously dedicated to the military is now dedicated to security, education and culture. The museum Museo Nacional de Costa Rica was placed in the Cuartel Bellavista as a symbol of commitment to culture.

Costa Rica’s Commitment to Education

In Costa Rica there is a clear commitment to education. Rising education levels fostered impressive gender equality. This allows Costa Rica to use its female population more productively. Likewise, education nurtured improvements in health care and life expectancy. Education also boosted the economy and improved English-language skills. The majority of the population is considered middle class making most people socially equal thus eliminating class warfare.

Exotic Nature & Sandy Beaches

Maybe Costa Ricans’ contentment has something to do with their commitment to preserving nature and the ability to explore dazzling beaches, exotic animals, and lush jungles teeming with wildlife. Many would agree that it is easier to be happy while basking in sunshine and greenery than while shivering through freezing winters in Wisconsin or sweating your way through blazing hot summers in Arizona. It’s hard not to smile as you gander at natures prefect symmetry on the wings of a butterfly, or gaze at a rainbow of colors in bloom, or hear birds rhythmically chirping their mating song. Nature has way of soothing our soul and lifting our spirits. If you need a little joy in your life perhaps you should visit Costa Rica.
