Ticos and Ticas of Costa Rica

The natives like to refer to themselves as “Ticos” or “Ticas”. These colorful names have a long and storied past and with origins attributed to the words “hermanticos” and “hermanticas” which mean “little brothers” and “little sisters” respectively. The Ticos and Ticas are festive and know how have fun and celebrate. These beautiful Costa Ricans have fun-loving nature and know how to welcome travelers and new residents.

Costa Rican Heritage

Over ninety percent of Costa Rican’s indigenous population are of Spanish lineage and are direct descendants of explorers like Columbus and other Spanish conquistadors of the late 14th Century. On the Caribbean side of Cost Rica the much of the populace can trace their ancestry to Jamaican. Most immigrated for the employment opportunities of building railroads and working the banana plantations in the late 1800s. Many of the people with Jamaican ancestry speak a lovely dialect of English with a Caribbean influence.
